Found the list of male and female words fascinating, but I beg to differ about gardening being gender neutral, at least in the U.S. As a long time landscape designer and nursery"man", I assure you gardening is definitely a female dominant activity.
Kate, your experience (and mine, too!) has shown gardening to be a primarily female activity. But when I tried to find some reliable stats on the gender of gardeners in America, I was surprised by how close to gender-neutral it turns out to be. Depending on the source and the specific definition of “gardening”, the stats I found ranged from about 55% female down to about 47% female, plus various numbers in between. Surprising, eh?
I'd just say personal experience in the field for 50 years says otherwise. Often when I do landscape consultations the husbands don't bother to attend. or only pay attention when the budget or construction for the project comes up. And women shoppers at nurseries far out number men. In England, it's a different story. Men are much more "gardeny" there, even straight ones.
I love my copy of "Animal Portraits". I will have to have you sign it sometime. The sepia- tone prints are spectacular.
I did so enjoy the story about your physician grandfather. My father's first cousin was our family doctor - and the only doctor in the farming community in Indiana where my father grew up. He had a similar attitude about his prowess, but I glommed onto his truth when he made my mother (a registered nurse) give us our "shots" , rather than risking us screeching at his technique.
The Snoop video was hilarious! I guess I need to check out the Late Night fair more often.
The cultural and sex differences in word recognition are fascinating. It's always wonderful to learn more.
Girls whose dads were flyboys know what an aileron is. They also threw up a lot going on family vacations in small planes, but they got some choice vocab words.
I knew the female words and a couple of the male ones, like howitzer, but the measurements and science ones were beyond my social science background. Good to learn new words. Always handy for word games.
Barbara, thank you for this fascinating info about language. I only knew two of the male words and didn't know one of the female. I still think that espadrille should be the name of a Portuguese pastry.

Kerry! Loved the Dr joke. Loved learning this about your family. Too bad your grandfather never met your father-in-law. This morning it felt good to laugh at something.

I love Wild Things and always look forward to it.
Boson or bosun is also a term for the deck boss, the most senior deck hand on a ship responsible for the ship’s safety, cleanliness and maintenance.

Fascinating!
Beautifully written. I felt as if I was in the room. Also, I loved the Dr. joke!
